Mental health: Psychiatrist emphasizes importance of regular sex



Dr.(Mrs.) Winifred Isa, a Consultant Psychiatrist with the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Benin has said good sexual relationship serve as a key components towards improving mental health.

She noted that sex helps to stabilize hormonal imbalance in humans while lack of job satisfaction often lead to anxiety and depression were associated with other mental health problems.

Isa disclose dthis during the launch of the re-activated “Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital Lenscope Magazine” at the Weekend in Benin City.

The Magazine was established when Dr (Mrs) Olabisi Ihenyen was the Medical Director of the Hospital. Dr. Isa said:

Having a good sexual relationship is very important for mental health”, but she warned that “risky sex behaviour must be avoided not to hurt others”, especially under a haze of willed ignorance. 
Although, there are some persons who believe in the spiritual aspect in mental health treatment, but, job satisfaction is also important for good mental health”, she said. 


Earlier in a remark, the Medical Director of the Hospital, Dr. Sunday Olotu, said the Health Institution has evolved and have made positive impact in the last 53 years when it was founded.

He challenged well-meaning Nigerians and relevant agencies of government to accord mental health treatment desired attention to make society saner.

He explained further that the Hospital despite paucity of funds, was now opened to Professors in the field of medicine and other relevant professionals in Universities for sabbatical.

Olotu, said the Hospital under his watch, has been repositioned to provide a world class service delivery, accounting for the international recognition by the United Nations office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Centre for the treatment of mental illness.

We need to do our best towards ensuring that the treatment and rehabilitation of mental health patients get the best care”, he said.
