Five Days, Five Ways: Styling A White Shirt

There’s something incredibly sexy the simplicity of a white shirt and jeans hold. Period. Perhaps it has to do with the easiness of the look, the effortlessness, the borderline French chic vibes it plays with, the casual smart style, the versatility… who knows.

One thing remains true: to this day, with a few nips and tucks inherent to each and everyone’s personal style, the white shirt and jeans look remains a classic. Pure style locked in a timeless sartorial bubble.

I’d argue that nothing is easier to wear than a white button-down shirt. Classic, versatile, simple, fitted, oversized, buttoned to the neck or wrapped around the waist, paired with vintage jeans or a Gucci skirt — there’s really no wrong way to work the staple into your wardrobe.

1. Over the collar

Statement necklaces or bows tucked under buttoned up collars are very trendy, or you could opt for a statement necklace worn over the collar instead. It’s an easy way to use a white shirt as the canvas for a favourite piece that’ll make heads turn.

Why fix what ain’t broke? A white shirt and blue denim is a match made in heaven. Team a crisp cotton shirt with this season’s myriad blue denim jean options.  Don’t shy away from pre-distressed denim it adds character to your outfit, or look to a flattering A-line denim skirt for a nod to the versatile 70s look that’s still getting plenty of mileage

3. White on White

What more screams class? Grab a pair of fresh white jeans paired with an oversized shirt, tied into a knot, and pulled together with nude and gold accessories. And voila you have a lovely crisp look that “speaks yes I know how to stay clean.”

4. Throw on a blazer

Take a style cue from Janelle Monae and throw an oversized men’s blazer over a white shirt — nonchalantly belted at the waist or worn open for a look that says “I don’t really care.” Because that’s what French women do really well: wear classic white shirts and look unbothered.

5. Mix it up

Just because we are on the topic of White shirts does not mean we can’t throw in other interesting pieces. Add a splash of colour with a vest, which can be worn under your white shirt, this brings a whole new dimension to your outfit making it both appropriate for work as well as casual enough for a day out.
